NEW BUSINESS GRANT FOR BIOTECH
At BioMelbourne Network's September 2009 monthly BioBreakfast, guests were pleasantly surprised to hear about the launch of a new biotechnology business grant from the Victorian Government. Known as the Biotechnology International Partnering Program, the grant provides financial support for biotechs, up to three times a year, to attend overseas conferences and trade events.
The concept of the grant came out of the Victorian Government’s 2007 Biotechnology Strategic Development Plan, specifically the Competitive Business Evnironment Working Group, comprised of a number of industry volunteers, chaired by Dr Leigh Farrell. The Working Group recognised that biotechs spend considerable funds each year travelling to partnering meetings, sometimes placing a considerable and unavoidable strain on financial resources.
Biotechs can apply for a grant to cover the costs associated with attending an international conference as a participant (up to $2,500), presenting at a conference (up to $3,000), as an exhibitor in a shared stand (up to $4,000) as a sole exhibitor (up to $8,000) and as a first time sole exhibitor (up to $10,000).
This grant is an industry specific grant, exclusing academic and research institutions, distributors and service providers as well as a subsidiary of a foreign company.
The Victorian Government, in particular, the Biotechnology team within the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development, deserve praise for their rapid response to this suggestion and for ensuring the idea was acted upon and generously funded. Well done – an excellent outcome for the industry.
To read the guidelines and apply for the grant go to www.business.vic.gov.au/BUSVIC/GAP/PC_63461.html,svGAP_PC=PC_6346

Grant Writing Master Class
GRANT WRITING MASTER CLASS
Have you ever raked over government and philanthropic web site searching for grants that might suit your organisation and found the process to be utterly confusing and an excruciatingly frustrating practice ? Are you eligible or not ? Finally you find one, read everything to discover that it closed last week ? Who hasn’t?
A comprehensive grant strategy is somthing that few of us can honestly admit to have developed – a list of relevant funding sources, a calendar of due dates and a review of guidelines and inclusion criteria.
The Grant Writing Master Class on 9 October 2009 at KPMG will give you head start in getting this activity underway for your organisation and a framework to develop future strategies for your organisation.
Government and private grants, philanthropy and scientific grant writing will all be covered as well as the process of researching grants and the actual writing of applications. The presenters will cover average success rates and assessing the potential for success.

Pharma Partnering Workshop
PHARMA PARTNERING WORKSHOP - CHANGES AT PFIZER, MSD AND GSK
The pharma landscape has seen some very big changes in the past year with some companies moving from “Big Pharma” to “Mega Pharma” as we’ve seen Pfizer merge with Wyeth and MSD acquiring Schering Plough. As the number of traditional players in the world’s pharma industry is decreasing to comprise of a few large pharma companies it becomes more important to hear about what areas they are pursuing in drug development as they steer the pharmaceutical development agenda. GlaxoSmithKline have also reviewed their licensing strategy in a new direction.
To present their new strategies and highlight what pharma want from biotech now, we have the following line up for Pharma Partnering 2009 on 24 September 2009 at Clayton Utz.

AAPS Workshop on Quantitative Model-Based Drug Development in Drug Discovery and Translational Research
7 November 2009
Los Angeles Convention Center
Los Angeles, CA, USA
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:
The area of Preclinical PK/PD Modeling & Simulation encompasses a multitude of quantitative approaches to integrate preclinical pharmacology, bio-marker response and safety data toward the selection of the most promising drug targets and the development of the most optimal drug candidates. In recent years, this rapidly evolving area has been recognized as critical for the pharmaceutical companies to reduce high rates of failures in advancing compounds from the bench to the bedside.
In this one-day workshop, participants will be provided with basic education and hands-on training on technical and theoretical aspects of the preclinical PK/PD modeling via a combination of lectures, case studies and break-out sessions demonstrating the key mathematical strategies to build dose-response relationships, efficacy and human dose projections.
Participants will be:
- Introduced the concept and fundamental principles of PK/PD modeling and simulation, particularly in preclinical phase;
- Discuss case studies demonstrating the applications and values of preclinical PK/PD modeling within the framework of industrial and academic drug discovery and translational research efforts;
- Provided with practical hands-on training on the key aspects of preclinical PK/PD modeling; Topics include PK/PD modeling and simulation for drug target selection, mechanism-based PK/PD modeling for biomarker development, and human dose projection for both small and large molecule (e.g. antibody) compounds.
- Introduced to strategies with which to overcome challenges associated with the implementation of PK/PD modeling and simulation in drug discovery and development, including silo-structure, interdisciplinary communication and decision-making infrastructure.
